Jess and Sophia were so passionate about investing and really generous with their time and insights. It was very inspiring to see female role models working in investment management and encouraging more women to join them

What are Mentoring Circles?

Future IM/Pact Top Talent Group members are invited to participate in exclusive female-only Mentoring Circles with leading investors from our partner firms. Online sessions are run with 2-3 mentors and 4-6 mentees each week for 90 minutes over a three-week period. Our aim is to provide mentees with:

  • A greater understanding of the investment management industry
  • Valuable connections with professional investors
  • Practical tips for essential skills to develop and showcase
  • The motivation to further investigate a career in investment management

Mentors also gain an opportunity to hone their mentoring skills. In 2023, we will run 7 Mentoring Circles with partner firms TDM Growth Partners, Macquarie, Australian Ethical Investment (AEI), QIC, Cbus Super, Tattarang and Rest. Our first Mentoring Circle of the year was held in March with two fantastic female investors from TDM Growth Partners and four impressive young women from our student cohort.

Participants

Investment Managers, Jess Bell-Allen and Sophia Croker led the Mentoring Circle, bringing their passion, enthusiasm and wisdom to a group of students hungry to learn about what this career path offers.

“The Mentoring Circles gave me an opportunity to engage with young, aspiring female investors and really distil key learnings from my own journey” Jess Bell-Allen

The four mentees, Sophia Psaros, Anna Cheung, Sophia Lin and Amanda Ooi, were university students from NSW and Queensland completing various stages of finance-related degrees.

“It was great to connect with professional investors and very exciting to hear Jess and Sophia’s career journeys in the investment management industry. Their insights and career advice has inspired me to reflect on my own path, leaving me feeling more prepared” Sophia Lin

Students gained:

  • deeper understanding of the investment management industry and current market trends
  • insights into what a career in investment management looks like and advice on how to best position themselves for an investing role
  • valuable connections with professional investors and potential future employment opportunities

Mentors gained:

  • engagement with bright and curious female talent
  • opportunity to share their experience and raise awareness of the investment management industry and exciting career paths within it
  • chance to hone their mentoring skills

What did participants learn

Mentees gain invaluable insights into the core capabilities and qualities investment firms are looking for, how to build a professional network, ways to demonstrate curiosity and market trends. Students are given background content and take-home exercises each week to keep them engaged and prepared for discussions, and each makes a 5-minute presentation on a current market trend during the final session.

“Jess and Sophia were so passionate about investing and really generous with their time and insights. It was very inspiring to see female role models working in investment management and encouraging more women to join them” Sophia Psaros

The mentors were inspired by the calibre of the young women in the program and excited about the future of the industry with such engaged female talent coming through. They also appreciated the opportunity to build their own mentoring skills through the program.

“The students were really engaged so we had some great discussions and could go deep on their questions and share the breadth of our roles. And personally, it was a great learning experience for myself to build out my mentoring skills” Sophia Croker

I truly enjoyed the program as I learnt so much from both the mentors and my peers. It has definitely piqued my interest and I now feel more prepared and inspired to apply for graduate investing roles
