Jeff with fellow 2022 Investment Competition winner Stephanie Liow.
How did you first hear about Future IM/Pact?
I became aware of Future IM/Pact through the 2022 Investment Competition.
What do you find most valuable about the program?
The Future IM/Pact program offers strong industry connections, and I was able to get my first internship in investment management through the competition. Furthermore, I was able to build connections with senior professionals at the events.
What interests you about a career in investment management?
The dynamic nature of investment management intrigues me. The constant changes in the market bring new challenges every day. I had been considering this career path and thanks to Future IM/Pact I was able to explore it in greater depth.
Tell us about your experience participating in the Investment Competition?
The investment competition was challenging because we had to build a macro-economic investment thesis on Chinese equities. The nature of topic introduces many fields of knowledge, including geopolitics, industry trends, portfolio theory, market valuations, risk management, tracking error modelling. At the same time, the challenge enriches the experience because it motivates us to quickly learn about all these different topics in a short period of time.
I met many mentors during my Schroders internship that I will continue to stay in touch with, and it provided great insights into what a dynamic career investment management is.
Tell us about your winning internship prize?
My prize was a 3-month long internship at Schroders’ Sydney office. It was a rotational program that allowed me to work in Products, Australian Equities, Private Debt, Fixed Income, Multi-asset and Real Estate team. My main duty was to assist teams in their operations and lead personal projects. I met many mentors during my Schroder’s internship that I will continue to stay in touch with, and it provided great insights into what a dynamic career investment management is and what a potential pathway into the industry may look like.
During your internship, did you notice a gender imbalance within the workforce or barriers for women entering this sector?
Schroders greatly emphasizes gender equality. I didn’t notice a gender imbalance within the workforce during my internship, however in the context of the broader industry, I understand there may be barriers to women entering this field.
Here’s what Schroders had to say about Jeff…
“Jeff is a highly capable, motivated, potential future investment professional. We’ll be sure to stay in close touch with Jeff as he makes his way throughout the rest of his studies and we’re hoping we can continue our work interaction with him in some form.” Nicole Kidd, Head of Private debt Australia, Schroders
