Future Impact

How did you hear about Future IM/Pact?

I saw a Facebook promotion for the Future IM/Pact National Investment Management Case Competition in 2022 and I’ve been involved ever since!

What do you find most valuable about the program?

As a student, the opportunity to learn about investment management has been invaluable. This sector is generally not well known among university students, and at times, it can be seen as inaccessible. Through the Future IM/Pact Investment Competition and my Cbus Super internship prize, I now have real insights into the industry, and through connecting with Future IM/Pact’s partner firms at different events, I can see how much passion there is for supporting young women to enter the field.

What interests you about a career in investment management?

I am fascinated by markets and enjoy a challenge. Investment management often requires a deep understanding of the current macroeconomic environment and specific industries or companies, and I find this very exciting, especially as things can change fast. I also like that I’ll be able to directly see the results of my investment decisions. Through my involvement with the Investment Competition and my Cbus Super internship, I have become certain this is the career path for me.

How was your experience with the 2022 Investment Competition?

Participating in the Investment Competition was one of the best career decisions I have made so far. As a first-year university student in 2022, it was very challenging for me and required a lot of fast self-teaching, but it was a fantastic opportunity to get some insight into the work of an investment analyst.

There is currently a big push for women in the investment management industry because of the existing gender imbalance, so I see this as a great time to pursue this career as a young woman.

Tell us about your winning internship prize?

I chose to do a 4-week internship at Cbus Super in the investments team. I spent 2 weeks with the asset allocation team and 2 weeks with the Australian small cap equities team. My day-to-day work ranged from conducting quantitative analysis using Bloomberg to writing summary notes of broker research. I had heard about Cbus’ supportive work environment and thought I would get an enriching internship experience there – I was right!

As a young woman, do you feel confident and supported to pursue a career in investment management?

Yes. I can see that there is currently a big push for women in the industry because of the existing gender imbalance, so I see this as a great time to pursue this career as a young woman. There are definitely still many barriers for women, especially when it comes to progressing in the field. It can sometimes be a bit of a ‘boys club’ and the culture is not always welcoming for women. However, this does not sway my intention to pursue a career in this industry – in fact, I embrace the challenge.
