With the right approach and preparation, you can increase your chances of success. Here are a few tips to help you through the application and interview process:

Research the company

Before applying for an internship or graduate position, research the company and learn about their investment philosophy, culture, and values. Review their website or reach out to someone who works at the firm. This will help you tailor your application and prepare for the interview.

Tailor CV for investment management

Be sure that your CV and covering letter highlights skills and experience that are relevant to investment management. Use specific examples and quantifiable achievements to demonstrate your abilities. This should include your academic success and analytical skills but also convey your passion and curiosity for markets, which are key qualities recruiting investors are looking for. Here's some tips for leveraging your transferrable skills for an investing role.

Network

Use your network to learn about potential opportunities and make connections with people in the industry. Continuously expand your network, attend events and take advantage of programs such as the Future IM/Pact Mentoring Circles. When you attend Future IM/Pact and other events, spend time talking to different professional investors. Remember they are there to meet you and help you join the industry.

Practice your interviewing skills

Prepare for the interview by practicing your responses to common interview questions. Research the company and the position, and be prepared to discuss your knowledge and interest in the industry. Demonstrate your interest and passion

Show the interviewer that you are genuinely interested in investment management and are passionate about the industry. Comment on relevant market trends or topical deals relevant to the sector. Discuss your own experience with investing and your key learnings and goals. Read more about how to demonstrate your curiosity and passion for markets.

Be professional and follow up

It goes without saying, but be sure to dress professionally for the interview and arrive on time. After the interview, you could follow up with a thank-you email to express your appreciation for the opportunity and to reiterate your interest in the position.
