Meet Lara Proctor, a bright and driven young woman undertaking advanced university studies in finance and ancient history. Lara shares her experiences with Future IM/Pact, how it has piqued her interest in the world of investment management, and how she is exploring career pathways and opportunities within the industry.

Tell us a little about yourself

I am 19 and currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Advanced Studies at USYD majoring in Finance and Ancient History. I am currently exploring investment management, investment banking, and consulting careers and mapping out a path to my future!

What do you find most valuable about the Future IM/Pact program?

I have been involved in the Top Talent group for two months and already I have undertaken an amazing mentorship with Australian Ethical and had the opportunity to attend an Early Career Panel, which I greatly enjoyed. As a student, it is often tricky to form long lasting professional connections yet Future IM/Pact gives students the opportunity to build meaning relationships with people who are leaders in their field. Thanks to Future IM/Pact, I am now exploring a career in investment management which I hadn’t considered before.

What are your career aspirations?

As I am only in my second year of a four-year degree, I am immersing myself in as many aspects of the Finance industry as possible. Currently, I would hope to secure a graduate position at an investment management or banking firm and branch out from there. I hope to build a career and discover a niche that suits my interests and people skills. Longer term, I would like to pursue further study through a postgraduate degree as I am a life-long learner! I look forward to exploring different aspects of this industry and am open to new opportunities.

I heard about Future IM/Pact through a contact who introduced me to the incredible Yolanda Beattie! The program has provided me with invaluable opportunities to build meaning relationships with people who are leaders in their field.

What will you do over the next few years to better position yourself for a career in investment management?

I have already completed several months of work experience, internships and programs with private equity and superannuation firms which have been invaluable learning and relationship-building opportunities. Over the next few years I will engage in further meaningful internships and mentorships, as well as take part in key university societies. I also look forward to directly engaging with industry professionals in investment management through Future IM/Pact’s programs and events.

As a young woman, do you feel confident and supported to pursue a career in investment management?

I feel supported as many companies are implementing gender quotas and students are being targeted through various women-focused scholarships, internships, and mentorships. The key barrier currently is the lack of visibility and presence of women in senior positions. This visibility is crucial in encouraging young women to have long-term goals and access mentoring from senior women who can help them navigate their careers.

Prior to my involvement with Future IM/Pact I had only considered investment banking or consulting, but I am now very interested in exploring a career in investment management.
