I’m drawn to investment management because it sits at the intersection of research, strategic decision-making, and long-term value creation. I enjoy analysing macro trends, evaluating businesses at a granular level, and translating that insight into disciplined portfolio strategies – something I’ve experienced first-hand managing a family portfolio and working on structured credit and corporate finance projects at D.E. Shaw and Bain. For me, investment management offers the challenge of making high-conviction decisions in an environment of uncertainty, while aligning capital allocation with a clear thesis. I’m keen to deepen my technical expertise, enter into Australian financial market space, learn from experienced investors, and refine my ability to generate consistent alpha over time.
The conversation was incredibly insightful and reassuring. What stood out most was gaining clarity not only on different finance career paths, but also on how to intentionally build long-term career capital in Australia as an international student. Hearing Christy’s own journey made the guidance feel genuine and practical.
My biggest takeaway was a clearer understanding of the differences between wealth advisory, private wealth management, and broader investment roles, as well as the key skills and mindset required early in your career. The opportunity to gain first-hand industry insight through a conversation she arranged with a senior investment adviser further strengthened my confidence and direction.
I'll absolutely continue using Career Connect to meet and learn from other mentors as I further shape my career direction and deepen my understanding of the industry.
Be clear about what you want to gain from the conversation, even if it’s just one or two things. Do a bit of homework on your mentor’s background so your questions are thoughtful and relevant. Come prepared with specific questions, but stay open to where the conversation flows – often the most valuable insights come from organic discussion. Most importantly, be curious, honest about where you’re at, and respectful of your mentor’s time.
Yes, absolutely. I plan to continue using Career Connect to meet and learn from other mentors as I further shape my career direction and deepen my understanding of the industry. I’m particularly keen to explore opportunities across funds management, private wealth management, and broader investment roles, with a strong interest in equities, multi-asset strategies, and portfolio construction. I’m also interested in learning more about how institutional investment teams think about risk, asset allocation, and long-term capital growth in the Australian market.
My long-term aspiration is to build a career in investment management where I can contribute to thoughtful capital allocation and long-term value creation. My dream role is to work as a buy-side investment professional, helping shape the flow of capital towards the most productive, innovative, and responsible sectors of the economy.
Beyond financial returns, I hope to play a part in directing capital toward businesses and projects that generate sustainable growth, strengthen communities, and create positive outcomes for society. Ultimately, I want my work to sit at the intersection of strong investment performance and meaningful real-world impact – contributing to both long-term wealth creation and broader economic progress.
Warren Buffett is someone who deeply inspires me both professionally and personally. His long-term investment philosophy, disciplined approach to capital allocation, and emphasis on fundamental business value have shaped how I think about investing. Beyond his investment success, what I admire most is his humility, integrity, and ability to communicate complex ideas in a simple, teachable way; he truly embodies the mindset of a lifelong learner and teacher.
His dedication to his work even in his 90s reflects a rare passion for his craft, and his commitment to philanthropy demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility to society. Together, these qualities represent the kind of investor and person I aspire to become.
