What interests you in investment management or advice?

I’m a Curtin University Graduate who has a passion for turning data into actionable insights in the investment industry. I am interested in understanding how to break into the industry as an Investment Analyst or Graduate Financial Advisor. After my Bachelor degree which was a double major in economics and finance, I have developed my data  skills through the CompTIA Data + Certification and Azure Data Fundamentals. I am further undertaking other industry certfiications to improve my skills.

Through my involvement with Future IM/Pact since 2022, I’ve gained knowledge, understanding and connections which has given me the confidence and skills to break into the investment industry.

What are you curious about in markets right now?

The trends in the market, investment strategy, the software used in industry now such as LSEG workspace (refinitive), investment products.

How did you prepare for the conversation with Steven?

I looked at the outline and noted down further questions based on how to get into industry that I came across through my study and job applications.

How did the conversation go? What was your biggest takeaway?

The conversation was insightful. My biggest takeaway was that it is vital to get into industry by doing further study as most networking, jobs and opportunities do not exist until you pick a specialisation.

Through Future IM/Pact and further study I have met mentors such as Yolanda Beattie and Steven Bird who will continue to inspire and connect me to the investment and advice industry.

Any advice for other mentees using the platform or preparing for a great conversation?

Prepare for the conversation based on questions you have from study, working in the industry or applying for jobs, and be open-minded and ask follow up questions (go with the questions appropriate to the conversation). Additionally, do not book another session just to show commitment and for the sake of it (all my questions to enter into industry were answered in one call. When I have entered industry and studied further I will have more).

Will you continue to use Career Connect to meet and learn from other mentors?

Yes I am interested in equities, financial instruments and bonds. However, I feel I need to specialise and enter into the industry first to ask these questions.

What’s your dream job? What kind of impact do you hope to have through your career?

I hope to begin my career as an investment analyst or professional trader in some sort of asset or funds management role.

Who inspires you (professionally and/or personally) and why?

Initially it was my farther (Andrew Haythorpe) who worked in the investment industry and inspired me to invest from a young age learning the importance of gold and investments. Through Future IM/Pact and further study I have met mentors along the way such as Yolanda Beattie and Steven Bird who will continue to inspire and connect me to industry.
