Day in the life of an Associate: Christy Kwong, Evans & Partners

Christy Kwong didn’t expect to land in wealth management, but a chance introduction to the industry sparked something that accounting never quite did. Three years later, she’s thriving as a Senior Associate in the strategy team at Evans & Partners. Her role is fast-paced, varied, and driven by a genuine passion for helping people make smart financial decisions

Tell us a little about your role

My role is helping individuals manage their money and achieve their financial goals by assessing their current financial situation, developing personalised plans, and providing ongoing advice. This includes budgeting, tax management, retirement planning, and estate planning.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My day usually involves preparing for client meetings, presenting advice, and writing Statements of Advice (SOAs).

What’s the most exciting part of your job?

No two days ever look the same!

What’s the biggest challenge you face, and how do you handle it?

Time management is one of the biggest challenges, as I juggle adviser support, research tasks, SOA production, and time-sensitive client needs.

To manage this, I use structured prioritisation and practical tools. Templated advice and process checklists help streamline repeatable tasks, and keeping a clear, updated to-do list ensures nothing important slips through the cracks. Staying proactive rather than reactive is key, and I’ve found that allocating time blocks for deep work versus quick tasks helps me stay efficient and responsive.

What skills are most important in your role?

It’s important to understand different strategies and stay on top of regulatory and compliance frameworks. Legislation changes regularly, so advice has to be accurate and compliant.

Communication is also critical. Being able to explain complex financial and overall superannuation concepts in a way that’s clear and relevant to clients makes a big difference.

Clients won’t remember your modelling—they’ll remember how you made them feel.

How did you get into wealth management?

I came from an accounting background, but I quickly realised it wasn’t something I saw myself doing long term. While exploring other options, my recruitment agent introduced me to wealth management, and I fell in love with it almost immediately. The mix of technical knowledge, long-term strategy, and human connection really appealed to me. Helping people make informed decisions about their future gives me a strong sense of purpose.

What advice would you give someone starting a career in wealth management?

Focus on building strong foundational knowledge, but don’t underestimate the value of people skills. Wealth management is more than just numbers—it’s about guiding people through some of their most important life decisions. Clients won’t remember your modelling, but they will remember how you made them feel. Learn to communicate clearly, listen actively, and stay curious. The industry rewards those who can balance analytical thinking with empathy and trust-building.

If you could go back to the start of your career, would you do anything differently?

Don’t be afraid to change direction and try something new. If something doesn’t feel right, take the time to re-evaluate and pivot toward what genuinely interests you. It’s never too late to make a change. Some of the most rewarding opportunities come from taking that leap into the unknown.

Christy’s current inspiration

Best thing you’ve read lately?

An article in the AFR (Australian Financial Review) about the shift in intergenerational wealth transfer and how advisers are preparing for the ‘Great Wealth Transfer’. It explored how baby boomers are passing down significant assets to their children, and how this is reshaping client conversations around estate planning, tax strategy, and values-based investing.

Trend that’s caught your attention?
