Lucy Meagher, Senior Investment Adviser at Evans and Partners, entered the world of wealth management through an unexpected but serendipitous career pivot from consulting. Over the past decade, she has built a reputation for combining technical expertise with a deeply personal approach to client relationships. Today, she manages portfolios for high-net-worth individuals while actively expanding her client base with drive and precision.
I wear two hats in my role. First, I’m a personal portfolio manager for high-net-worth clients, helping them achieve their financial goals through tailored investment strategies. Second, I focus on business development, growing the number of clients I work with, and expanding my reach.
No two days are the same, but a typical one includes client correspondence, market trading, portfolio reviews, meetings, fund manager presentations, and preparing proposals for new clients. I also carve out time daily for business development, whether that’s meeting prospects, checking my pipeline, or making cold calls.
Onboarding a new client is always a highlight. It’s the culmination of a journey where someone says, “I trust you, and I want to work with you.” That moment never gets old—it’s both a compliment and a thrill.
Time allocation. Balancing client service with business growth is demanding. I’ve learned to say no to things that don’t serve my priorities, and become comfortable working after hours to maintain high standards for my clients.
Technical skills include investment analysis, understanding taxation and superannuation, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
Non-technical skills are just as critical: time management, empathy, interpersonal communication, hustle, and a self-starter mindset.
I had never heard of wealth management but got to know the people across the hall [Evans & Partners]
It was a lateral move. I was working at a consulting firm that shared a floor with Evans and Partners. I hadn’t heard of wealth management before, but I got to know the team across the hall, and they convinced me to apply!
Stick with it. The early years can be tough, lots of effort with little return. But if you keep doing the right thing, day by day, it will pay off. It’s a career worth building.
I’d probably pursue the CFA, or a more finance-focused degree. When you’re starting out and trying to grow your client base, anything that helps you stand out is valuable.
