People are busy and first impressions count. You need to demonstrate your curiosity, commitment and passion so that potential mentors can see that spending 45 minutes with you talking about markets, investing and careers is going to be rewarding for them too.
Quick tips before you get started:
- For the best viewing experience, zoom in to 125%.
- Click the arrow in the left-hand menu to reveal all the profile questions.
Here’s how to create an impressive profile on our Career Connect platform:
Show your personality and passion
Most investment leaders are passionate about markets, businesses and the economy. Many are equally intrigued by topics like social change, environmental challenges and human progress.
Think about topics that fascinate you and showcase that through your profile. The goal is to spark a meaningful conversation that shows your passion and curiosity. A few ways to do that:
- Consume newspapers, financial blogs and podcasts and form a view about market trends and stocks. You could share a short opinion piece on your profile. Here's some news publications and social media accounts and podcasts to follow.
- Prepare a stock pitch and upload it. You could do this solo or with a team. It’s a great way to invite feedback from a mentor and potentially have a group meeting.
- Read widely about investing, economics, psychology, decision-making or any other topic that drives markets. Then, write a short note about what interests you and the kinds of questions you’d love to explore with a mentor. Check out our favourite investing books.
Set up a great profile
Here’s how to get your Career Connect profile working for you:
Choose an investment stream: Career Connect gives you access to professionals across both investment management and investment advice (wealth management). Set up your profile in the stream that interests you most – your profile will copy across to the other stream too, but there are different questions.
Upload a photo: A clear headshot personalises your profile and helps mentors connect with you.
Add your LinkedIn profile: This is compulsory. If you don’t have one, now’s the time to create it. LinkedIn also helps auto-generate your bio (which you can tweak), or you can upload your CV to do the same. Be sure to upload all documents as PDF.
Share the purpose of your conversation: Think about where you’re at in your journey and what you want to get from the experience. This is a mandatory field and you can select multiple options that reflect your goals from the following list:
- Exploring the day-to-day of investment management: You're just getting started and want to understand what roles exist, what skills are needed, and why it’s a great career path.
- Diving deeper into a specific area of investment management: You’ve done some research, participated in competitions, internships or events, so you're across the basics. Now you're ready to zone in on a specific asset class or sector that really interest you.
- Getting feedback on an investment idea: Whether it’s for an assignment, case competition, interview or personal interest, you’re looking for feedback on your stock pitch or investment thesis from a professional investor. You can upload it to your profile so mentors can review ahead of time.
Highlight your areas of interest
This question helps mentors understand your passions and prepare for a meaningful conversation. Topics could include market themes like geopolitics, AI, ESG, or broader interests like history or climate change. You don’t need to be an expert - just be curious and open to exchanging ideas.
Upload a short video intro (optional but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
This is a great way to stand out. Some mentors will only connect with mentees who share an introduction video as it shows initiative and gives them a sense of who you are. Your video should be:
- Less than 2 minutes
- Uploaded to a shared drive or YouTube (then linked in your profile)
- Focused on why you’re passionate about markets and investing
- Personal: share your experiences such as building a paper portfolio, buying shares, joining an investment competition, completing an internships etc
- Don’t let ChatGPT write your script. Find your own voice and express why this work excites you.
Next steps
Once your profile is set, you'll be ready to go when our mentors come online in September. We want to give mentees plenty of time to create a killer profile before we bring our professional investors onto the platform. You can edit your profile to add more detail, video or an investment pitch if you don't have everything ready to go at first.
How to make the most of these conversations
Once mentors are on board, you'll be matched with a professional investor that suits your goals and needs. To get the most out of this experience, it’s essential to invest time in preparing for your meetings. Mentors are busy professionals generously offering their time - so leave a good impression by doing the groundwork. The more prepared you are, the more meaningful and valuable the conversation will be for both of you.
