Ian Furphy, Portfolio Manager at Victoria Funds Management Corporation (VFMC), was the first Career Connect mentor to dive in and start having conversations with the students and early-career professionals he was matched with.
His early adoption has provided valuable insights into how flash mentoring can work in the investments industry – and what makes it effective.
For Ian, Career Connect’s design made getting started surprisingly easy. “The platform’s been super easy to book meetings and connect,” he says. But what impressed him most was the quality of preparation from the mentees themselves.
“The two I’ve connected with so far have really put in a lot of work in terms of uploading their resume and experience,” Ian explains. “One of them even had a video introduction around the topics and sectors they’re interested in, which is not something you normally get with this kind of mentoring program.”
That upfront information proved invaluable. It meant less time breaking the ice and more time getting into meaningful conversations. “The first session’s pretty productive because you know exactly what they want and why they’re participating.”
The mentees that Ian has connected with are at different career stages – one still at university, the other already in the workforce but looking to transition into funds management. Despite their different starting points, both were seeking similar guidance around securing that crucial introductory role in the industry.
“Both mentees were looking for advice on landing their first investing role,” Ian observes. This pattern suggests that the biggest barrier for people trying to break into the industry isn’t a lack of knowledge or qualifications – it’s access. They need someone on the inside who can help them understand how hiring actually works, what firms are looking for, and how to position themselves effectively.
This is precisely the gap that Career Connect is designed to fill: creating direct pathways between emerging professionals and the industry insiders who can demystify the entry process and help build their networks.
I plan to spend longer catching up with my mentees every month or so as needed. It's good to share my knowledge, and hear about their progress
While Career Connect’s initial premise is intentionally low-commitment – just one 45-minute conversation – Ian found himself naturally extending beyond that framework. “I’m probably going to spend longer catching up every month or so as needed,” he explains.
One of Ian’s mentees has been keen to continue. The pair have now met three times with the expectation of further sessions.
“It’s been good to share my knowledge, and hear about their progress,” Ian says, highlighting the reciprocal nature of the conversations.
This organic evolution speaks to the quality of the connections being made through the platform. When the foundation is solid – clear expectations, thoughtful preparation, and genuine interest on both sides – what starts as a single conversation can naturally grow into something more meaningful.
What’s clear from Ian’s experience is that Career Connect is lowering traditional barriers to mentorship in investment management and advice. The platform’s structure provides enough guidance to keep conversations on track without being prescriptive, while the mentees’ preparation work ensures that precious time isn’t wasted on preliminaries.
For an industry that often struggles to provide accessible pathways for emerging talent, Ian’s willingness to be first demonstrates the kind of leadership that can make a real difference, one conversation at a time.
